Design Guidelines

The design objective in participating residences will be to achieve the FAA required noise level reduction (NLR) when the project is completed. This is mathematically equal to achieving a DNL of 45 dB in all livable rooms. The recommended treatments in the design package for your home will be based on your home's exterior DNL and the existing NLR achieved by your existing windows, doors, caulking, etc.

This means that if your home is located between the 70 - 75 DNL contour line as shown on the 2003 NEM, the design criteria for your home will be a noise level reduction of at least 30 dB in major habitable rooms (75 - 45 = 30). If your home is located within the 65 - 70 DNL, the design criteria will be a noise level reduction of at least 25 dB (65 - 45 = 25).

Based on these noise level reduction goals, the Design Team will assess your home's current construction conditions and in some cases, even perform an acoustical test on your home for its pre-construction noise level reduction performance.
